Labor, Dr. Seuss Style

Can I labor over there?
Can I labor on the chair?
No! No labor over there!
Don’t labor on the chair!
Sit there, sit there, you will see,
You must labor with this IV!
I do not like this sharp IV!
I need to move, to dance, to pee!
Doctor, Doctor, let me be;

10538437_727529033979149_6226410037895800021_n
Say, get your pesky hands off me!
No! You can’t move, or dance, or pee!
You must labor with this IV!
Not over there, not on the chair,
Not with the ball, you’ll have a fall!
Can I labor with a doula?
Can I use some calendula?
Can I labor on hands and knees?
Can I birth just how I please?
No! Not with a doula!
No –what’s calendula?
Lay back, lay back, count to ten,
Breathe –he he hoo –push again!
No thank you, doctors, nurse, and crew,
I’ll go and labor without you.
I’ll labor here, I’ll labor there!
In the shower –everywhere!
I’ll labor standing, squatting, sitting
I’ll labor on my couch while knitting!
I’ll have a doula –I’ll have three!
They’ll let me eat and bring me tea.
Try them! Try them! You will see!
You can go shove that darn IV.

As Doulas and Educators within this Positive Birth Community Collective, we value ourselves as women, partners, and mothers.
We are passionate women with visions and goals of providing a place where birth is normal. Believing that birth is a right of passage and that each woman deserves the opportunity to enter into motherhood in power and dignity, we empower each woman to participate actively on her journey through pregnancy and childbirth. We will support you through this process with education, encouragement, and support.
We hope to encourage and inspire you to explore creative ways to nurture both your families and your own contributions to the world through your gifts.
As mothers and women, we believe that we all have something to give, and a woman should not have to choose between motherhood and fulfilling herself outside of the home.
Congratulations! We are blessed to be on this journey with you. Welcome to our Positive Birth Community.

Woman Servant in the Waiting Room

This just happened after fasting for over 12 hours (for a routine blood draw), and then Starbucks immediately after. So, in short: Fasting + caffeine= This thought pattern of gratefulness 🙂 Read on…

I’m always blessed to meet Mommas & hear parts of their journeys, even in the most peculiar places, today being the Quest lab waiting room.

When you find your passion, I believe the universe brings together other souls with like-minded visions to sprinkle encouragement when you need it.

After hearing our chat, an older gentleman had to share his story as well, including, “We did Lamaze back then, and wow, did it make a difference for me & my wife! Do you all still do that? I’m so glad you are supporting women in childbirth. God bless you & your endeavors.”

Wow.

I’ll take it–the blessings, the stories, the questions, hearing the desires of an expectant mother, & the desire of women to further their calling by helping other women in this vital journey of motherhood & womanhood.

I am a doula, a “woman servant”.

If home is where your heart is, I am home. ~Kate LeClair

Making Pregnancy More Comfortable

“Senior Pranakriya and Kripalu yoga instructor Jacci Reynolds shares a few simple postures for expecting mothers to practice during pregnancy and use during labor. These easy but effective postures help mama to ease pain and release muscle tension during this time of transformation.

Pregnancy brings immense joy to an expecting mom and her partner.  However, as wonderful as it all is, many women experience a number of aches and pains in addition to the wonder and amazement.  A few simple yoga poses and reminders done daily can help alleviate many of these common aches and pains.”

Doulas Could Help Lower Insurance Premiums??

“The authors argue that covering doula care as a health insurance benefit could have clear, system-wide financial benefits. C-sections cost more than vaginal births — roughly $28,000 and $18,000, respectively, for commercial payers, according to estimates cited in the study. If doula care during childbirth costs an average of $1,000, and given the estimate that a C-section costs about $10,000 more than a vaginal birth, it would be cost-neutral for private insurers to cover doulas for 10 births if the doulas helped avoid just one non-indicated C-section, the researchers reason. Kozhimannil added that similar savings could also apply under Medicaid.”

Cover Up Options for Breastfeeding That We Recommend at PBC

There’s so much news lately about women breastfeeding in public and people being shocked and offended by it. I really feel the need to perform sort of a public service to let people know that there are several breastfeeding cover-ups out there that will make everyone around you more comfortable.
